nurse to sleep question

Do any of you have older kids that you nursed to sleep when they were babies? My DD is 6 months old. It's the only way she'll sleep and it's such a peaceful way to go down. However, the internet and books and everyone offering advice says I should be putting her down awake so she can learn how to sleep on her own.
