Is she right in saying a mentally ill person should not conceive?

I have a mental illness. 1 out of 4 people around the world do. I've never hurt anyone, or acted out violently, ever broken the law, have a clean criminal record. Have a job, a car and take pretty good care of myself. But Lik every person with a mental illness I get very sad sometimes. Maybe every 6 months I get suicidal thoughts but know to never act upon them. My coworker said that she doesn't belive someone with a mwnta illness can be a fit parent. When she saw my expression of sadness she tried to sugar coat it and say that "But hey what do I know?" My other coworker says she was totally out of line. Do you think a Mentaly Ill person should not have children?

Depends. If they were like you then it's totally fine. 
If they were a crazy person that had meltdowns all the time and weren't safe to be around then I'd say no.

You can't sweep all mental illnesses into one catagory. As a general rule I'd say it doesn't matter. However I have a bipolar, manic depressive, often suicidal grandfather and he caused a LOT of misery for his children because he wasn't a fit parent. Also I've read a lot of experiences from people who's parents we're phychopaths. No two cases are the same of course, but I do think everyone should use good judgement before concieving whether they have a mental Illness or not.

My boyfriend suffers from depression and he has his days where he is off. But I know without a doubt that he will be an amazing father. I don't think anyone is right saying someone shouldn't have a child unless that person is violent towards others and is a threat to a child.

That's ridiculous. Mental health doesn't change your love for your children unless that's the mental health issue

I am Bi-Polar and I can 100% tell you that she is wrong. I know I'm going to have my ups and downs. I know I will doubt myself and sometimes get down and go through depressive stages. But as long as you trust yourself, have support of family or friends and if you are on medication stay vigilant on keeping up with it to control your symptoms you will be fine. No one should tell you you won't be fit if you have never done anything REAL that would suggest otherwise. Mental illness is not a joke, but it is also not a reason not to have a child. I have a few friends who are either bipolar or have severe anxiety and are some of the best most caring mothers I know.

I have three kids one on the way and I have Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, depression, anxiety and a personality disorder. I'm pregnant with my fourth baby and people can try to tell me that I won't be a good mom just because of my issues but I just respond with, "no I'm just more unique and special." Lol.
