When would you break up with your boyfriend if he hasn't proposed to you? After how many years of being together?

I think age really has a lot todo with it. I was in two back to back relationships for 4.5 years with no signs of marriage. Then when I turned 28 and was in a new relationship, we decided to get married a year later (he was 27 at the time). Psychologically speaking, Men have to be in the right mind set to be ready to settle down. That average age is 28 for men.

I personally would not leave my boyfriend if he had never proposed to me. I don't need the legal marriage in order to feel as though he is committed to me and I to him, but that's my personal belief. You are allowed to feel however you want to feel about that. It is a very personal decision. If you feel like you need a marriage, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Have a talk with your spouse about it and see where he stands. What amount of time you spend waiting is completely up to you. My personal belief is that if being married is more important to you than the person you're with and you are willing to leave them over it, then it's probably not true love to begin with and you're better off not marrying that person anyway. You're better off finding someone who you couldn't imagine your life without, marriage or not.

It comes down to knowing what you want nd what your highest priority is in life at any given time.  If marriage is central to what you want from a partner, and the partner you are with doesn't want that with you/doesn't want the same commitment you do, then it is probably best to move on as a misfit relationship and create space for partners who are better fits for each of you.

No, I've been with my boyfriend for 11 years. Of course I hope he asks some day, but it's not a deal breaker. I want to spend the rest of my life with him regardless. My sister gave her husband an ultimatum after 14 years and now they are divorcing only a year later.

I feel like it all depends on the situation. I currently stand by my philosophy of if we have been dating for five years and have no engagement ring then we need to sit down and seriously talk about marriage and if it's something we both want or not. I want a marriage and kids so being 20 now I think having a 5 year limit (putting me at 25 or older when and if the situation may occur) is okay.
