Name too common?

Question

Is the name John (nickname Jack) too common? It is a family name and it just seems traditional to me.

Personally, it would be too common for my tastes, but common doesn't have to be a bad thing. If it feels right to you, go for it.

I've actually never met a John, and I've only known like one Jack, so I don't personally think it's too common. I guess it just depends though. If you know a bunch of people with kids named John/Jack then it might not be a good idea.

But I'm not very fond of the whole "I'm gonna name my kid one thing but then call them something else" trend. It just seems weird to me, unless it's like a shortened version of their name. So if you're calling your kid Jack, I'd recommend just naming him Jack. In my experience, it can be very confusing for the kid and for others. I knew a guy who's parents called him something other than his real name, and he literally didn't know his real name until he was like 10.
