contraceptive ideas?

Ive been having sex with my boyfriend for a long time and we have talked about finding something more efficient than condoms. I thought it would be a good idea to get a contraceptive implant. Does anyone know if its a good idea or not? does it have side effects? does anyone have it and can tell me how it has worked for them?
