help ?! abusive father !

When I was a child my father was both emotionally and occasionally physically abusive . I finally confronted him recently and he finally apologized after 22 years and he's trying to make it up to me by trying to create a better relationship but it's almost to late now . I appreciate him admitting to what he has done and trying to make the effort but I just don't know how to accept the effort from him . The damage is done . It's almost awkward when he asks me to do things with him. What can I do to help myself let go of the past and give him a chance to be a real father ? Anyone else go through something similar that can give me some tips on how to let him in and forgive him fully ?
