how long is safe?

How long is it safe to labor at home before going to the hospital? I want a drug free labor and i would really like to sit in the bath as long as i can before going. Hospital is about a half hour drive.

Time them. I waited until mine were 1 minute apart before going in and only labored at the hospital for 4.5 hours. We were only 5 minutes from the hospital though. 
Maybe time yours and when they are 5 minutes apart then go in? 
I plan to labor as long as possible with this one too and we are over an hour from midwife this time.
