Donating Gifts- Rude or not

My husband and I are arguing about this. We receiving a few gifts for Christmas that we don't like/need and have no way to return them. I want to donate them so some child can enjoy them but my husband thinks that's rude and wants to just put them in the basement(hoarder!). So am I being rude by wanting to donate and not add clutter?
