Job help?

The time has come for me to go back to work! I graduated with my masters degree in may and had my baby in June (currently 6 months). However, I have had no luck finding a job in my field. I feel so down. There's no way I spent all this money in school to be jobless. I've applied to over 120 Academic Advising/Peer Mentoring jobs and have yet to land one. The saying, "it's not what you know, but who you know," is so true. Who knew it'd be so hard to get an academic position at college/university. I've been living here for 6 months (LA) and I don't know anyone here to get a foot in the door. I've been told several times my resume and experience are phenomenal but a candidate who was referred was hired. Anyone work for USC/UCLA/West LA have any tips? Or in a college/university setting in general? I really need some advice. TIA
***EDIT*** I have even done an internship for academic advising and student services for 1 yr community college students and have also worked in high school/elementary setting as in class aide. But still no luck at all!!!
