I need your help please

When me and my fiance argue I sometimes push and hit him, today we argued and I got close to him like if I was going to hit him and he grabbed me by the neck and pushed me to the ground. In the end he was on top of me with his hands on my neck intell I pulled his hair to get off, did I deserve this and am I over reacting?? Please help me figure it out.
