Need to Vent...naming baby

So my husband & I are having a 2nd girl. We are still up in the air about names, but Sydney & Haley are on the top of our list. My problem is that him & his family like to shorten names, like literally everyone's name is shortened. I told him that whatever we name our daughter, I would want her to be called that & not some shortened name. His response: I don't care, I'd shorten her name, too. Why can't you just go with the flow?
