pacifiers and breastfeeding

My daughter is 5 days old. She sleeps all day expect for when I wake her to eat and stays up most of the night crying. The only time she soothes herself to sleep is when she sucks her fingers. So, I figure a pacifier would put her right to sleep. I'm strictly breastfeeding though and there is so many different opinions and studies on nipple confusion. I don't know what to try. Did you give your breastfed baby a pacifier and did it interfere with breastfeeding?
