What would you do?

My grandfather is ill and I'm not sure what to do. Here's the story as to why... Growing up I heard my mother talk about how terrible he was/is and how she will never speak to him (and hasn't in 25yrs) and said if I ever talk to him she would disown me. A couple months ago I added him on Facebook and introduced myself and said I would be open to meeting him and he said he would like that but was away at the time. Christmas season hit and we got busy and never met up. I just heard he's sick and don't know if going to the hospital is the appropriate thing since we haven't met and maybe he doesn't want to and is just being polite? Also I heard his wife is a real piece of something and wouldn't want me there because she thinks I'm after his money. What would you do? Go and meet him before his health could decrease or keep my distance
