Breastfeeding really messy?

Anyone else? My son is 18 days old and we've been needing to use a nipple shield and I'm currently trying to ween him off of it, but I feel like every feeding is super messy! Every time he comes unlatched to take a breather the milk is running down his face and behind his ear. Then it gets on his clothes and on me and I feel like my new perfume should just be called breast milk lol. I always have to have a burp cloth rolled under my boob but that doesn't help much either.
