got my first period since before I was pregnant

I've been breast feeding so beside the initial after birth bleeding I haven't had a period since July of 2015 and it's not at all how my periods used to be before I had a baby. I used to get really terrible cramps but haven't had hardly any (not that I'm complaining) and instead of the first couple days being really red it's been nothing but deep rusty color. is this normal? can I expect them all to be different than they used to be?
