Why do they induce you if you go over your due date? Is it dangerous to you or the baby to be 2 weeks over due? Isn't it possible the conceived date is just off? Why not just let a baby cook as long as possible?

Baby can have their first bowel movement and if they poop in the womb and swallow it they can get really sick. I have two friends who delivered late this past year and both of their babies had a bowel movement while they were in labor. One of them actually had to spend several days in NICU

The notion of there being increased risks to baby after 40 weeks, according to Katherine Graves, is based on a poorly researched observation made some time ago by some doctor or other, which somehow became the standard.

Irrespective of that, you must bear in mind that your body is designed specifically for giving birth and that it, and your baby, know what they are doing. Why then, would your body allow your baby to grow to a size that means it is incapable of delivering it?

On top of that, the way your due date is calculated (when taking into account the fact that every woman's menstrual cycle is different, and the point of conception within that could vary) means that the date you're given is an estimate at best - only 5% of women actually deliver on their due date. And none of this is taking into account the fact that, as no two women are the same, no two gestational cycles are the same in length, meaning your natural cycle could well be more (or less) than 40 weeks.

Now don't get me wrong, induction does have its place, and in some cases there are complications that can occur post 40 weeks - however there are complications that can occur at any point of your pregnancy. My point is, induction (in my opinion, and according to the research of Katherine Graves) is, for the most part, an unnecessary procedure that often causes both mother and baby undue stress, and statistically very often leads to intervention.

Ur placenta actually doesn't function properly after 40 weeks. My LO was actually having issues getting oxygen and I was oxygen myself for her bc the placenta wasn't working as it should. I delivered just shy of 41 weeks but knowing what I know now I would be more aggressive with going over my due date. Not the same for everyone I know but my little one had a rough entrance given I just know a little differently now.

I was induced because he was big and I'm small and they worried he wouldn't fit if I went longer.
