Time for family when both parents work FT?

My husband and I both work full time, we get home around the same time 5:30pm. We have 2 kids, 4 months & 4 years old. We only get to see our kids about 3.5 hours a day... 1.5 hours in the morning and 2 hours at night. By the time I make a home cooked meal, sit down to eat as a family, give baths, story time, it's about time for bed (7:30pm)... Not much quality time spent as a family. Does that sound about right compared to other families? How to you make time to be together? There just isn't enough hours in the day. My kids are on a strict schedule and pushing their bed time back would just be a disaster. Sunday is our only day all together, my husband works on Saturday 8-5. Suggestions?!

What do your weekends look like? Do you have shorter hours or are you two off? It sounds like the weekends are going to be the best time for family time.

But there are ways to make time with what you already do now! If you don't eat with your 4 year old, I'd recommend doing so! Sitting around the table and talking during dinner is something many children remember while growing up.

Do you read to your older child before they go to sleep? Getting ready for bed 10 minutes earlier and spending a few minutes reading to them is something many children like, too. Taking turns with your spouse reading every night or every few nights and see if you can get books from the library during the weekend or ask whoever watches your children if they have any books or can go to the library with your child and pick out books they would want to be read to.

As long as you are using that time for quality time (eating together as a family, reading together, getting outside on weekends, playing together), then I wouldn't stress. My parents worked full time and the things I remember are eating dinner at the table together (not just zoned out around the tv), my mom putting me to bed with a story or a song, family outings, etc.

That is our week life also we are both off on Sat and Sunday though so that's our family time .
