yeast infection treatments

When you have a yeast infection do you buy monistat or do you go to the doctor and let them prescribe you a medication? I usually go to the doctor because I never thought monistat worked. I tried it one time but it didn't so I went to the doctor and she told me it was a very bad one so maybe that's why it didn't work
