Difference?

What's the difference between a yeast infection and bv (bacterial vaginosis)? Has anyone ever had both that they can tell me what the differences are? I've been really itchy down there since Sunday night then I got my period yesterday morning. I made an appointment with my obgyn for Thursday but I was looking into what it could be. I've had a yeast infection before but it was a long time ago so I don't remember if this is what it felt like or not.

I also recently started having sex with my boyfriend last weekend and we did it a lot friday/Saturday so that probably has something to do with this.

Bv will smell bad. I had it at the begining of my last pregnancy. Its thick and white or creamy looking and has an odor.

Yeast infections are causes by an upset in the natural flora of the vaginal area which causes the yeast fungus to grow outside of the normal amounts and create an infection. Symptoms are thick, odorous discharge that may look cheesy and white. Usually the vagina is very itchy, and any wetness in the area is very irritating to that skin.

Normally this is treated with an oral antifungal or antifungal cream. Creams may help with the itching and burning immediately but can be messy. The pills won't provide immediate relief but may work overall faster to cure the infection. You can also get a yeast infection from a pH imbalance, such as douching, using harsh soaps, or by having sex with a person who has a yeast infection.

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by a bacterial infection that affects the vagina. This can be caused by any number of ways that introduce foreign bacteria into the vagina, from as simple as not washing your hands and touching the genitals, to something like leaving forgetting you have a tampon in. Literally anything that introduces bacteria. Symptoms are similar to yeast infection, but the irritation and itching may be less significant. Usually a foul smelling or purluent discharge occurs and you may have irritation of the vagina. It can have a variety of symptoms, so knowing your normals is usually key. You may or may not have pain during sex.

Treatment is usually antibiotics after a culture.

Neither one of these do I recommend trying at home remedies, especially because they can be easily misinterpreted as each other. It is always better to have a doctor diagnose you. However, good hygiene and keeping the area dry is a good start. Bacterial infections can move to other parts of your reproductive or urinary tract if left untreated or treated ineffectively. Good luck and don't worry, most people have at least one instance or BV or a yeast infection during their life.

Yeast you will be itchy , red, & your discharge should be clumpy like cottage cheese. I had that while I was pregnant. The bacterial infection I just got over my obgyn told me it was from having a full Cath at the hospital after my c section. Also it was slitly irritated down there also.
