Standing in crib instead of sleeping

Hey mommas. I put my son down around 7/8pm every night and at 11:30 he wakes up crying and screaming while standing up in his crib. By this time I try holding him for awhile but the second I start to lay him down he wakes up crying. I spent 2 hours just setting him back down on his back hoping he'd eventually wear himself out but never did. It wasn't until he let go once and fell (didn't get hurt just really scared himself.. he does know how to let himself down from standing but must of just lost balance or was tired) that I gave in a just took him to our bed where of course he sleeps perfectly fine. How do I stop my son from just standing all night?? Any ideas lol?
