Using a shield?

Question

So we've been using a nipple shield to breastfeed for about a week now.  Does anyone have any advice on how to get baby off of the shield and latch onto me? In the hospital she latched once or twice with no problem, and we've have had 2-3 feedings without the shield at home but that's about it 😬

I used a shield with my son til about 3 weeks. I would start the nursing session with the nipple shield on, then after a few minutes I would quickly unlatch baby, take the shield off and latch him on again. It took a few more tries occasionally. That's what worked for me! Or I would nurse with it on, nurse with it off the next feeding. Back and forth. I had very flat nipples to begin with so no, it wasn't easy! But it was probably 3-4 days of getting him used to actual skin contact and then we never went back! Successfully breastfeeding going on 11 months this month now :) best of luck <3

The shield has been the only way I can nurse, without it I would be feeding baby formula so I swear by it, as long as she is getting my milk Im ok, you gotta do what you gotta so right?

I've started with the shield, then when I stop t burp her & put her back on without the shield it seems like she's still hungry enough that she'll just latch on most times. Half the time she still wants/needs it, but I feel like as time goes on she's getting better without it.

My baby is 11 days old and I've been using shields since day 4 due to blistered and bleeding nipples . They have now healed thanks to the shields and I'm so keen to get her off them. I tried starting with the shield and then swapping half way but she would get really upset and not latch again which in turn upset me . We have just decided about 10 hours ago to go completely off them and possibly live with a few short feeds and sleeps  if she gets cranky . 
Feeds  have dropped from 40 minutes each side to 10/15 minutes but she is sleeping fine . She is still a little fussy getting her to latch but is feeding so hopefully she gets use to it .

I just kept trying without it until baby finally latched on. I was so glad to get rid of it! It took a few weeks though. We actually finally got rid of it when he was really hungry, we were out and I couldn't find the shield in my bag. Blessing in disguise! It was actually there at the bottom, hiding.

I used a shield from very early on, but one night (at around 3 months) when I was reeeaaally tired and couldn't be bothered with my shield routine, I just put my boob in his mouth and he latched. He was still half asleep, which I think actually helped. I did this the next couple of nights and we haven't used it since. Mind you it also helps that my boobs have changed shape and it's just not as easy with the shield anymore (it falls off).

We had to use the shield with my son until he was 3 months. Then one day it just clicked, and we haven't had to use it again since then.

I always read that when weaning baby from the shield you start with the shield and after a while unlatch and try to "trick" baby into latching on without the shield. After a while baby will be able to latch without the shield. If the baby gets too frustrated and upset you keep the shield on and try again when baby isn't so hungry/frustrated.
