Help please

I know this is a lot to ask, but in my family a period is a gross, taboo subject. I just started a few days ago on my Birthday and I don't know how to deal with all of the stuff I need. They think all I need is pads, and won't let me get tampons (which I need for swimming) is there anyone who could maybe send me a package of stuff I'll need? I just don't know what to do, I'm sorry if this is too much to ask.
