what do you think about bag taxes?

A few of the towns around me have passed a bag tax law. The point is reduce the use of plastic bags (mostly at grocery stores). So if you go grocery shopping and don't bring your own reusable bags they charge you between 10-20 cents to use plastic bags. Just wondering how people about this. It doesn't bother me since I bring reusable bags anyway. But some people get upset because these towns are big tourists destinations and they don't realize it's a thing before they arrive and try to shop.

I didn't realize not everywhere did this, I support it plastic bags are terrible for our environment and at least where i'm from that's the main purpose is to protect our future.

I think they disproportionately effect poor people.

I would consider it an inconvenience. I'm a coupon, Ibotta grocery shopper who counts every penny and I usually leave with 10-15 bags that I later recycle. 
It's just hard to haul in two kids and try to carry enough shopping bags for all my grocery at the same time.

My only issue is that it can affect those who cannot afford it.

But for me, I don't mind it. I can afford to pay a few extra cents, and a lot of places near me don't even really do it.

They've been doing this in the uk for a while now. I'm just used to it and take my own bags shopping instead.

I like it :) i mean its only cents so its not going to stop most people but it makes people possibly want to save some money and help the environment. I love my reusable bags

Great idea, there's just a lot of ways that implementation can go wrong. How will reusable bags be given out? Is it up to the shopper to buy them themselves or will the grocery store provide them? Around here people usually need 10-15 bags to carry all of their groceries in and tend to rack up a $300-$800 bill shopping since they do it all at once, so do they have to buy 20 reusable bags and bring all of them every time? Questions questions. 🤔

It's national law here (England and Wales) - plastic bags are 5p each and the profits go to charities (so it's not technically a tax). The number of disposable bags used has reduced hugely since the law came in and I think it's great from an environmental perspective.  I always have a couple of lightweight fold away bags in my handbag.

It's just 20c, what's the big deal? I use plastic bags for my rubbish. Ts cheaper than buying bin bags.
