conflicted: when should I tell my boss that I'm not returning to work after baby?

My boss currently thinks I am only taking seven weeks and then returning. However, my husband and I have decided it is best for our family if I stay home. I'm not due until June and they plan to hire a part time/temp person until I get back. I sort of feel like I should let them know so they can find a more permanent fit... when do you think I should tell them?

Look into your company's policy on not returning after leave. If your leave is paid, some companies require you to pay back pay record during leave if you do not return to work, or pay back benefits paid for during leave. If your company doesn't have a policy like this I would just give the standard two weeks.

That depends, most places will fight you tooth and nail to not have to pay for your time off if they know you aren't coming back. So if you are on paid leave then I might wait but if it's unpaid then I'd tell them before you have the baby.

Wait until baby comes and you know for sure. I would give them about a months notice, but don't jump the gun! So much can change and you never know when you might need to go back to work for other circumstances, or how you may feel after your baby comes. Wait it out as long as you can while also ensuring to give them enough time to figure something out :)

As a business owner, I personally think it would be better to tell your boss sooner rather than later! :) replacing good people is really tough.

I'm working just a few months after maternity leave then giving notice, just for paid maternity leave and to keep my good insurance to cover birth and baby.

Is there a reason you wouldn't want to tell them now when they are going through the replacement hiring process?

I'd tell them 1-2 months before so they have time to interview people for the role. Also like the other lady said check your contract to see if your leave is paid or not still!
