my step sister told my mom yesterday that she thought she'd had a miscarriage. Apprently she was 10 days late for her period and then she went to the toilet and something "weird" was in her underwear. I said my my mom there's no way it was a foetus because it was way too early?! just looking for some backup here!

In my experience, my period has been 10 days late with BFN tests. Many women do have chemical pregnancies without their knowledge, but I don't think they should claim to have a miscarriage without some proof they were actually pregnant (BFP, higher hCG levels, etc). I've had 2 miscarriages, I had a chemical pregnancy at 5 weeks in January and the flow was just like my normal clotting period. At 5 weeks pregnant the fetus is the size of a sesame seed

She could probably still get a + test if she was pregnant. The levels take some time to go back down. Mine did anyway.

If she was pregnant she could still take a pregnancy test now and it should be positive. Or she could just be late and passing clots that look substantial. Who knows.

So I had a mc and then the next month I passed a decidual cast- don't look it up unless you're ready to be grossed out.  It's not a fetus, but your entire uterine lining all at once.  It's painful, and gross.  That might be what happened to her, technically it can happen to anyone at any time.

It could have been the sac. 
I think anything before 6w is considered a chemical pregnancy.

She could have had a clot. At 10 days past due for her period, she would not be very far along and the embryo would have been the size of a sesame seed or so. And unless she got a positive pregnancy test, why would she believe she was pregnant. Women are late for their periods all the time for a variety of reasons.
