newborn stomach or back?

My friend kept her baby laying on her stomach from birth til she was about 2. 
Then I read somewhere else it's best they sleep on their back to avoid SIDS
Back or stomach?

They currently teach back is best. They used to teach laying on the stomach so that if the baby spit up during the night they wouldn't choke, but then they could more easily suffocate with their face leaning forward into their bed/crib. Having worked in childcare I can say they just keep changing stuff.

The back. They call it "back to sleep". It helps babies without good control of their neck to not smother themselves while they sleep.

Supposedly back is best but honestly my son slept on his stomach when he was a baby (he's 6 now) he would not sleep on how back EVER I tried and he never would stay sleep. I rarely slept when he was a newborn so I watched him like a hawk but ultimately I think whatever works for you and your baby is best. We'll see how my new baby likes to sleep when he gets here.
