DO YOU BELIEVE ETHNOCENTRISM/XENOCENTRISM ARE DANGEROUS?

Ethnocentrism-the tendency for each society to place its own culture patterns at the center of things. It is the practice of comparing other cultural practices with those of one's own cultural practices to be inferior.

Xenocentrism- is referring ideas and things fr m other cultures over ideas and things from your own culture. It is an assumption that other cultures are superior to your own

Well, thinking that any culture is superior to another is not right and definitely damaging. Because that could lead to thinking your race or country is also superior to others (since they already think their culture is). And that is just not a good mind frame. It would lead to racism and xenophobia.

But if you take that part out - so let's say, you go to a part of India where they believe cows are sacred (part of Hinduism which is popular in India) and that is your culture; and then you look at pretty much any other part of the world where cows are eaten... you would probably judge that to be wrong. Because your culture says it is. But disagreeing with another cultures practice or values is a COMPLETELY different thing than thinking one is better.

I can disagree with animal sacrifice and judge it as wrong... while still recognizing and acknowledging that neither my culture or their culture is superior. THAT is not damaging imo. As long as you have the ability to place yourself in someone else's shoes and understand why they do what they do/why that is part of their culture/why that is acceptable for them... then it is not damaging. If someone lacks the empathy or understanding to do that; then it could certainly lead to damaging mind frames - like that superiority complex.

Yes, absolutely. One example is what Europeans did to Native Americans. They came onto their land, took it from them, told them that their culture and lifestyle wasn't good enough, and that they should try to be more "civilized". They just assumed their culture, language and lifestyle was superior and the only way to live. Not to mention they (the Europeans) spread diseases to them. You would think we would learn from this terrible part of history, but some people don't seem to have learned much at all.

As an anthropology major ethnocentric societies/or people are very damaging in my opinion. 1. As a personal problem 2. Creates problem within own society 3. Separates cultures instead of embracing diversity 4. Leads to extinction of cultures/peoples (at worst an example is genocide). If anyone needs proof, just look at the world today.

I certainly do when it comes to my society, but I'm from a  society that has historically taken advantage of others, I'm sure all societies have their own shames but I definitely feel ours heavily when people appear to glory in it
