AF Late with Cramps: Can I Assume I'm not Pregnant?

I'm 3 days late but I have cramps and some usual menstral symptoms. Can I assume the period is going to come or are what feels like menstral cramps common during early pregnancy? Should I test or wait? The reason I ask is because I've wasted a few pregnancy tests in the past by jumping the gun and testing only to menstrate later that day. For what it's worth, my cycle is very normal. I can generally predict to the day but those times when it has been late I feel like I keep getting my hopes up too soon.
