Unusual Bleeding

I just turned 44 years old and have always had a pretty easy/normal period. I typically spot a day, heavy a day, then spot another day or two. It was the same this past month. I started spitting on the 29th of April and was completely done by the 4th. A few days later I saw my boyfriend I hadn't seen in a few weeks and we had sex 4 times over the next 2 days. The evening of the 2nd day I started spitting again and I haven't stopped since......It's been a week now.  The first few days it was just spotting but now I'm to the point I have to wear a tampon because there is actually some flow. Has anyone else experienced this?  Could I be getting close to the change?  I'm thinking I need to maybe call my doctor but also thing it may be normal also.
