did I make the right decision?

So I broke up with my boyfriend not because he wasn't a great guy (he definitely was), but because he wasn't ambitious enough and we were at totally different stages in our lives. He still had a long way to go before he had his life figured out, while I pretty much have a plan set for myself. I'm almost done with college and he hasn't started.. we are both 20. And while I wanted to support him and be there for him until he was in a stable place, I couldn't rely on it or wait forever. I knew this situation would cause problems in the future, and I felt like he would end up holding me back from a lot of things. Is this a good enough reason to break up with someone? A part of me regrets doing it because I really did care about him and he was my best friend. But I feel like love isn't always enough to make a relationship work you know? What do you guys think?
