Does the ring matter to you?

Do you care how much your engagement ring cost? Do you care about the style? I'm shopping for engagement rings (YAY!) and really don't want to get her a diamond cause I don't like the industry. We have these "promise rings" that I think we are becoming too old for and I want to get her an opal engagement ring but the one I like is 300$ dollars and that's too little to spend from what I've read. Aghhh
