seat protector

We recently switched from the infant carrier to the convertible car seat. My mom has leather seats in her car. So she told me she got a seat protector to put under the car seat so it doesn't ruin her seats. I told her I'm pretty sure they aren't safe. So does anyone know for sure or know of a website I can look at to see what is safe and what is not? This is what she bought..
