3 months ttc at 40-IVF time?

Question

Hi all- My husband and I have been ttc for 3 months. Doing tons of supplements, opk, timed intercourse and acupuncture. I consulted a fertility specialist about 5 months ago and he suggested trying for 3 months then considering intervention because of my age. I'm not thrilled with the idea of IVF (my husband is especially not keen). But I don't want to waste time and we are lucky to have fertility insurance. Thoughts? Thanks!

We jumped to ivf quick due to my age and we soon found out as severe male factor was another issue for us. We have some euploid embryos frozen awaiting transfer in the late summer. I would go with ivf particularly if you have insurance and for the fact you can do genetic testing. At 40 you might be able to do 1 or 2 rounds and get enough genetically correct embryos for a few kids and can freeze some for later transfers. The process of IUI and ivf is not that much different and the surgery for retrieval is really not bad at all.

I started trying for my first when I was almost 39 and my OB said to give it 3 months as well. We got pregnant but miscarried so I started seeing an RE. She didn't think we needed to jump into ivf right away but wanted to try iui first. She did skip the pills and put me on injectibles to increase the odds of multiple follicles. We did 2 rounds of iui, had 4 good sized follicles both times giving us better odds for a good egg. First was positive but ended as a chemical and am currently 28 weeks with a healthy baby boy from the second cycle and turn 40 next month. I would see what the RE recommends for you and then decide what you and your SO are comfortable with.

I'm currently 39 and have a wonderful boy. That said, we were trying to get pregnant for 4 years. At the beginning my doctors thought it was all good and I should worry. It would take time. But I was surprised what they found out once I got checked in the fertility clinique and it took a year of checking and trying all sorts of other stuff before we had our first IVF. For the sake of not wasting time please go for it. Just to see what they have say and what they might find out.
