Do you think women objectify themselves?

I found this article and I'm going to post the link in the comments. I'm going to add some of it here. These are not my words. "I previously wrote about how I can’t listen to the radio these days because of the overtly sexual and misogynist lyrics sung by men. But I want to acknowledge the flipside of this as well.
The radio is also filled with songs sung by women that promote the very thing that they complain about. If women don’t want to be viewed as objects by men, the first step is to stop promoting their own objectification. There are many examples across all genres of music, from country to rock to hip-hop. I’ve picked a few that have been on the radio Top 40 and that I’ve hear all the time."

Women can objectify themselves. Internalized misogyny is indeed a thing that exists. I wasn't terribly thrilled with the article though. Her line at the end about cat callers was cringe worthy.

Her examples also weren't that great. I'd argue that Beyoncé is intentionally owning her sexuality in that song. It's also notable that she writes/cowrites her own lyrics. While The Britney Spears song was performed by a teenager dressed as a catholic school girl, and written by two men. It's always felt more exploitative to me.

I'd instead use All About That Bass as an example. It was written by Trainor, and places her self worth on what men like.

In my opinion, a woman is objectifying herself when she's doing or acting certain types of ways SPECIFICALLY for men.

With that being said I do think that a lot of people get objectification confused with doing what the hell YOU want. If a woman feels sexy wearing risqué clothing, oh well.  If a woman has a high sex drive and likes her music to be a reflection of that, oh well.

Feminism isn't about telling women what they should and shouldn't do, what is and isn't empowering, etc. Feminism is about accepting that different things empower different women and encouraging women to find what empowers them. Rather you wanna bump and grind on a stage singing "I love it, I love it, I love it when you eat it" or stay at home taking care of your kids and fixing food for your husband, if you're doing it for YOU how could it possible be objectification?

Nope because I guarentee if you look at the credits, most of those songs are written for them. Most artists don't write their own music. Its either written by other artists or its written by a company/someone paid by the company the artist works for. Its why I don't listen to mainstream music. Sell outs who follow a record label's agenda.

I can see both sides. I do think that it is a very powerful thing for women to stand up for themselves and not objectify themselves and other women. But like another commenter said, rich white men in suits control the music industry, and everything else. It's one of those "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" scenarios.

I'm not saying it's right but that is what sells 🤷🏻‍♀️ a music artist is gonna take a song that could reach number one and make them a lot of money over a song that won't be 'popular' and make them none. And as Randi pointed out they don't write them themselves!

Idk so much about music wise. However the promotion for the album and how/what they represent in the public eye is definitely a contribution to the objectification they seek to diminish.

I think we have to just question ourselves when is enough enough? Maybe 🤔 ? I feel as if all genders are objectified in ways because "sex sells" but women in general are beautiful (imo) "men want them women wanna be them" and visa versa. The point is to sell. I don't think these artist really care about anything they promote. Rather it's political views or their own album. There's no more passion or raw talent in music any more. It who looks good where and whoever is willing to participate (sell out) in whatever agenda they're pushing

A woman owning, embracing and feeling empowered by her sexuality is not objectifying herself.

A woman that measures how attractive she's perceived to be by men and uses that as the basis of her self worth, well then I'd say that's objectifying yourself.
