Should we still rely on tradition?

Hi ladies,

My boyfriend and I are planning on getting engaged and he asked me if he needed to ask for my dads permission and I said no as I don't believe in the some traditions as my happiness is what comes first sometimes as I'm the one who gets to marry him. Plus my parents live on another continent so they've only ever Facetimed and never spent time with him so I feel that they should just trust my instincts.  A few years ago I didn't even want to get married but I met this guy and suddenly my life didn't seem so bad knowing I'd be spending it with my best friend and all that matters to me is the two of us living a happy life. How do some of you feel about marriage traditions?

I like them. It's just a respect thing in my opinion. My husband did ask my dad and they are seriously like best friends now and I love that they have that relationship.

I don't think it's necessary, but I think it's a nice gesture. The way my boyfriend and I will be doing things is that he'll likely as me first and then he'll ask my dad for his blessing not his permission (though if he asks me in front of my family he'll likely talk to my parents first). We're a Catholic family so women aren't even given away by their fathers anymore and haven't been for many many years (my dad will walk me down the aisle, but I take the last few steps alone to show that it is my choice to marry and that I am not property to be given from my father to a husband). So asking for permission isn't overly common in many Catholic families anyways- many tend to go with asking for the father's blessing on the marriage instead.

My father and I don't get along all that well but he's a very traditional man. My DF asked for his blessing as opposed to his permission because that suited us better. Do what feels right for you and your family

I think the asking permission is kind of nice but it is necessary to do   My husband took my mom and dad out to lunch and kind of half told them half asked them to propose and showed them the ring.  Was one of the few times my dad has cried

I feel the same. I don't think it's necessary to have your parents decide if you get to be happy or not. Some parents don't like their daughters SOs so they may say no out of spite and there goes your future and happiness. This has happened to a few friends of mine. My husband didn't ask my parents for permission and even if they were to say no he said he would have asked me anyways.
