Formula too early?

My baby is 1 week old. I've been breastfeeding all week but my nipples are very sore. I really want to breastfeed but feel like I just need to give my nipples a break. Will it be detrimental to feed him formula for just a meal occasionally when I need it for relief? Seems like my son is constantly hungry (great problem to have!) so I'm not getting much of a break.

I breastfed for a week. I was in tears because of how bad my nipples hurt since he couldn't latch right. I cried, broke down, and gave him formula because all he was getting was blood. I tried to pump, but it was so difficult to feed him & pump. I'm a single mom, so everything is on me. He's a month old now and as of last week, he's completely formula fed. You need to do what's best for you and baby! At first I felt like a failure, but my baby is full and that's all that matters to me now.

Hi Rachel! I have the same problem and my child is only 3 days old! The difference is that it is the 2nd one so I am a little more at peace, even though I cried again this am because of it! I would strongly suggest that you pump your milk actually. It will show you how much you can get out and maybe this is the reason why you're hurting. This will give you a break and you can still give him your milk... best of both! 
In any case, it is never too early to give formula. I am still in the hospital and I started giving formula yesterday as my baby has been losing weight by over 10%! 😞 My nipples are also sore and bleeding...

Het go to check your milk. Also had thay prob iin the first week I took a breast pump home from the hospital and 2 days later my nipples were much better. I could  feed again two little suggestions. Hope they help my wee girl was breast till 8 mths and now she is formula... there should be no shame at all if you need to bottle feed it does happen  xo

Going to formula means you will have to pump if you want to keep your flow going to return to bf-ing. I have done this myself. It's difficult but now i just 50/50 feed formula and bf. What i will also say is get a nipple guard. I bought three different types before i found one that agreed with baby and me. I never get sore nipples now. X

Try pumping. It will still allow you to give your little one the awesome benefits of your breast milk while your nipples heal up. But if you have to supplement formula, don't feel bad. I had to with my little one. Nipple shields are also a big help, just don't rely on them too long.
