Birth control

I picked up birth control a few weeks ago to start and it always says to start the pack on the Sunday after you get your period. I was supposed to get my period on Monday but haven't yet, cause my period is irregular. I was actually on birth control and then stopped cause I ran out of pills and my mom had no health insurance to get them. So I ended up having to wait and had to get a new brand since what I was taking was recalled. I'm currently on no birth control pills, when taking birth control pills, do you HAVE to start the pills the Sunday are your period or can you start the pills whenever you want to? Like if your not even on your period. I would like to start them just so I feel safe.
