Discipline??

Question

How do you stop your toddler from doing things they arent supposed to. My daughter (almost a year) does not understand no. She is in a screaming phase and screams over everything. She also loves to grab at everything on our entertainment system as well as anything else that is within her reach. Cords are a huge favourite. How do i help curb this behaviour?

She can understand no, it's just a matter of you sticking to it and not giving in so she can learn.  Her screaming is her way of trying to get what she wants.  I just let my tot scream whenever she acted out until she realized it's not going to work.  I used timeout too, which takes a lot of patience but they can definitely learn. My 8 month old knows what no means.  Ya just have to stick to it and stay strong.

One thing I learned in being a sub. You have to get down to their level and be calm. If you scream and hover over them they are less likely to listen. Humans are rebellious by nature. Its best to be calm and as collected as you can. I didn’t make it through substituting fifth graders by yelling at them. Good luck.

Babyproof so they're out of reach. Also look into applied behavior analysis, it's pretty much using positive reinforcement and redirection

We used to pretend cry when ours did something wrong. It worked a treat with the eldest. He would stop immediately but our youngest just found it funny. We would have to physically remove our youngest until he eventually started looking to us to see whether he would be prevented from doing whatever it was that he wanted.
