Not drinking on 21st birthday?

My friends don't want to come to my birthday because it won't be at the club or bar. They are all 21 and I will be turning 21. Everyone expects me to go wild and drink alcohol but they all know that my family has a lot of alcoholics (Parents are recovered alcoholics) so I don't ever want to take a sip of alcohol in my life. They said that if they don't get alcohol that they at least want to smoke weed but I don't smoke either. Does anyone have advice? I honestly just think I would rather spend my birthday with my family only at this point.

I'm sorry, but they don't sound like really good friends. Go out to a nice dinner, have a spa day, do whatever YOU want. You don't have to drink on your 21st birthday and they should respect your choice.

Just spend time with your family then. If they aren't willing to spend your birthday with you JUST because you don't drink or smoke, that's messed up. And I'm not particularly saying to drop them as friends but I do suggest meeting some new people

if they don't want to respect your wishes of not drinking/smoking, then definitely just hang out with your family! For me hanging out with family is more entertaining and enjoyable than hanging out with friends most of the time

If you don't want to then don't! Do not let anyone convince you of it. It's really noble and shows that you're an adult by making a good decision. That's not the only way to celebrate. And they should know that if they were really your friends.

I think you are way smarter than your friends! Addiction runs in my family too so I was addicted to meth by age 16 and dependent on alcohol so by the time I turned 21 I was getting clean and everyone was like oh just take one drink but I can't just do one. You're very smart for thinking that way!

I grew up with an alcoholic father and I had a similar experience so I totally get it. Obviously them getting drunk or high is more important to them than you. Also some people just can't see the value in hanging out anymore unless there's some "wild story" that's going to come out of it. It's really sad that this is how people see "quality time." Some people just won't be able to understand your back story. It sucks and I'm really sorry. I'll hang out with you for you birthday! We can go to Chucky-Cheese!
