Would you date an atheist?

I had a guy I really like over the other day. He saw my Bible laying out and asked about it. He asked if I'm a Christian and I said yes. He said he was an atheist. I was shocked because he seems like the spiritual type. I asked if it would be a problem and he said no. He said he wouldn't push his views on me. Part of me feels like if he's around me long enough he might start to believe. I know I can't force my religion on him and I told him I wouldn't. I'm just so torn because I really liked him but after learning this, I'm a little disappointed.

At one point, this was a non issue for me. But several years ago I read something that posed a question: Do you want someone who tolerates what you believe, or do you want someone who joins you in that, encourages you, and lifts you up?
I view dating in the context of marriage, meaning that I don't date for fun like the world would tend to. For me, to date a non believer wouldn't make sense, because in our belief system, marriage is a beautiful design by God that serves as a "picture" of the relationship He has with us. Marrying an Atheist wouldn't serve the design God has for marriage, and so I would not marry one, and so AGAIN (😂) I wouldn't date on.
The marriages that my believer friends have with one another continually inspire and encourage me that God's command to not be unequally yoked was 100% for our good. I swear to you, these people who have built their relationships, from the beginning, on God has so much more joy in their relationships. They seek God in good and bad, and it is such a beautiful thing to see. Seeing relationship done that way, I cannot fathom what it would be like if one of them wasn't a believer. 
But again: do you want someone who simply tolerates the foundational belief of your life, or do you desire someone who will walk alongside you and seek out God with you?

Oops I hit maybe and meant to hit never although I prefer the answer "no". My friend is Christian dating an atheist and though she loves him it often ends in a lot of hurt for her. The Bible speaks about not yoking with unbelievers as well and gives ample examples of the Israelites doing so and then being influenced by them to do what they know is wrong etc etc

i only voted no because guys who are atheist can have a.....certain cringey personality. for example, not saying he is like this, but some are prone to being self important, entitled, uncaring and simply rude. it is nice that he said he wouldn't push his views on you which is a lot better than some atheists i know! if you like him, you can date him and see where it goes. there's no guarantee it will work out, but people marry those with different beliefs/religions/ideals all the time - the important thing is to know how to handle when conflict comes up. good luck!

I suggest seeking advice and experience insight from other Christians that are with or married to atheists or even someone with different spiritual beliefs. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and more optimistic. I'm actually a bit surprised at the judgement and attitude in most of these responses. Being a Christian isn't about living in a perfect Christian society and surrounding yourself with only Christians. It's about sharing the love and spirit of Christ etc. Remember the lord works in mysterious ways and maybe this man was sent to you for a reason (even if it's not converting him). But he may be just what you need. 
You did say that he was spiritual in ways. That is a very powerful statement. I would open up a dialogue with him and both of you should promise not to be judgmental or disrespectful when discussing religion and spirituality . You may be surprised that even "atheists" still are leading very "Christian" lives just without the label. 
Most atheist can agree with the basics about Christianity such as Love thy neighbor, do unto others as you would have them do unto you etc. they just start to disagree with the rather "superstitious" (for lack of a better word) aspects of Christianity. I just think you should keep an open mind.

honestly I dated an atheist once and he was awful and demeaned and undermined my belief in God so much. and I was very far from God at this time in my life and it really hurt me for him to be like that.

It's possible to change someone or a partner's religious views. It is a very hard road though, and sometimes things are just not meant to be. My fiance was satanist, and I was and still am christian. We fought all the time because our religions were completely polar opposites. He started going through alot of rough patches in life and had a close encounter, and my family and I helped him and took him to church with us, and he is now christian, so there is a chance that he could become christian.

Paul strictly warns to not be yoked with unbelievers also your he says you should only date Christian now if your already married that's different

I married one- it was one of the causes of our divorce. Think long term when dating and about the really hard questions before pursuing someone of that belief. 
My husband now was a non believer but I just knew from the very beginning that that wasn't what his heart said just his words, come to find out it was bc he wasn't raised with religion among other things, long story short God has been doing some amazing works in our life and my husband and children are getting baptized next week!

I'm a firm believer in being equally yoked with your SO. I dated a guy who was atheist and although we did not discuss our beliefs often, I knew down the road it would come up. The way I look at it is, if I were to marry this guy, is this someone I would want my children to look up to? Is this someone that will lead me or drive me from the cross? If you ask me, it's a door you don't want to open.
