Letting your kid have a phone before high school

Would you let a kid have a phone before high school? I saw an article on Facebook and a lot of moms were saying no they wouldn't. Some were saying their kids have flip phones and have no interest in social media accounts. No interest??? Those kids are already being secretive and flip phones are embarrassing. I don't have any kids, but I would definitely want to make sure my kid is safe and could reach me. Have a limited data plan and have to have me added on all social media. I grew up with everything being wrong and hid a lot of things and I want there to be an open communication. Rules are going to be broken, and it helps you learn
