In laws..

I just want to vent about the family I am marrying into. I'm 37 weeks pregnant by the most amazing man I've ever had the privilege to know. His family on the other hand is.... eh.

There is a situation going on between his cousin (we will call him Denny) and his cousin's baby mama (we will call her Brooke) . The two have been together for two and a half years, but have been off and on for about a year. Their relationship is one of the most toxic I've ever been around, I wish they would have split up long ago and saved themselves the heart ache. They both have anxiety, depression, and Denny was recently diagnosed (according to his mother) with bipolar disorder. They have both cheated on each other and have very ugly verbal arguments . Luckily they have enough sense to not have these big blow outs in front of their 18 month old daughter though.

Anyway, today they had a big fight. Their baby girl was with her grandmother and the two of them went to shop and eat about two hours from home. Their car ran out of gas on the way back and while on the side of the road Brooke supposedly caused the car battery to die by charging her phone to get in touch with someone to come help. Brooke's mother drove Brooke's car to them while her sister followed behind in her car so that Brooke's mom didn't have to stay. So Denny and Brooke go get jumper cables from the store that was down the road and somehow in that 20 minute drive there and back they break out into an ugly fight and Brooke drops Denny off at the broken down car with the jumper cables and leaves without jumping the car. It was a crappy thing to do considering how hot it was today but I don't agree with how they're all reacting.

Apparently, that was "the final straw" for Denny - which has been said tons of times by the way. But instead of the final straw just being that they end their relationship he has decided to take her to court to try and get full custody of their daughter.... We are next door neighbors to my boyfriend's grandparents who are also Denny's grandparents. They come over asking if for some reason they need people to speak in Denny's behalf if we would. I am so aggravated by this. Denny and Brooke have a shitty relationship, they're not good together but they're both very great with their daughter. They both work, they both own their own vehicles, they both split the money that it takes to take care of their daughter, and they both spend time with her and love her. If Brooke was a danger to her baby they wouldn't even have to ask, but this isn't being done for the sake of their daughter, it's being done as payback at Brooke. We told them we absolutely would not try and get her rights taken away and now they're mad at us.

But this whole shitty, immature incident has me worried... is this a look into my future? If for some reason (God forbid) my fiancé and I don't work out are they going to try and take my baby from me too? He and I have talked about how if something was to happen and we wanted to split we wanted to do right by each other and our daughter, but with this incident I worry that it won't be that easy. I would go crazy if they tried to do that to me. I hope and pray my fiancé and I don't split up but you truly never know and so this is fucking with me ..
