Mono help

Got diagnosed with mono last week. I've had a sore throat for two weeks now that just keeps getting worse and steroids aren't helping. Neither is ibuprofen, cough drops, etc. My tonsils are incredibly swollen and tasks such as swallowing and talking are sheer hell. For anyone whose had it- did you have similar experiences? How long did it take to even start to get better? Should I go to the er?
