Disciplining Your Child

So I'm only 7wks today but me and my partner just got into an argument because he feels that my opinion is wrong on how to discipline our child if and when we have to. Now I don't agree on whooping a child for everything they do but I do feel if I have to talk to my child more than 3 times I feel a POP or THUMP on the hand is appropriate, he feels it's wrong. He feels we should never pop our child and that if we do our child will turn out to be another statistic or a delinquent. I just want opinions on this topic and what other moms do. mind you I am a new mommy and I know that I don't want my child to be one of the kids that disrespect their parents.
