Could this dresser be transformed?

Question

I'm wanting to turn a cheap dresser into a rustic-farmhouse looking dresser for my baby's nursery. I found this one online for 50$ and am wondering if it could be transformed? Does anyone have any experience painting furniture? I just have never done it before, but don't have a lot to spend on furniture, and want to know if a beginner could do it. I also posted a picture from pinterest of what I am talking about. Thanks!

You can totally do this! And it will be so much fun because you can make it exactly to match your nursery or baby area.
I may be wrong, but I believe you'd need to sand it down (not completely, just to rough up), prime it, then paint it to the color of your choosing. I'd suggest using a zero voc baby safe paint. 
As for the hardware handles, you can pick nice ones that you like from target, Walmart, IKEA, etc.

Our dresser looked almost exactly like yours before we started to transform it. We had to sand a lot more for all the wood stained portions but like everyone is saying, just rough up the original varnished wood for the areas you are wanting to paint.  It’ll look great!

This would look awesome refinished with chalk paint!  Look up Annie Sloan chalk paint tutorials. It will be WAY easier than sanding to restrain, will adhere better than spray paint!

You can do it. Take off the handles. Make sure that you use a good color any gloss afterwards.

you need to sand it down first then paint it white... look up how to white wash on Pinterest. that will help you get the farmhouse look. it's a lot of fun as well to transform furniture. I recently started building my own furniture.

if there is a stain or anything on it you have to take that layer off before u paint because the paint will not stick
