For those with asthma- how long did it take for you to get diagnosed?

I have had a hard time breathing for as long as I can remember. When I was around 14 it started getting worse but every time I brought it up to the doctor they refused to do anything and told me I needed to go to the er. So I quit bringing it up until I was 21, when it started to get really really bad! And after months of fighting with my doctor and seeing a second doctor they finally tested me for asthma and I got my diagnosis (I'm now 22). I started using a daily inhaler and a rescue inhaler and holy Jesus I have never breathed so well in my entire life! I am so happy but I don't understand why it took so much fighting to get a doctor to test me! How long did it take for you?
