First plane trip with a 1 year old

My hubby and I are flying with our 1 year old in a few months for the first time. We are planning on holding him on our lap for the flight (it's only 1.5 hours). He will probably be walking by the time we go. I'm looking for recommendations for:

Should we check our car seat at the ticket counter with our luggage or plane side?
