"2" yr old refusing to eat off own plate!

my almost 2 yr old (2 weeks shy) is refusing to eat from his own plate. He knows how. we've had him eating with fork/spoon from plate for months!!! Now he throws a fit and pushes his plate away. then opens mouth in my or husbands direction! we all have the same food!!! I've tried to set foot down and refuse to feed him from our plates but then he screams and still won't eat his own food. I don't want him to starve but I also don't want to start a bad habit. any thoughts???
