abdominal pain

i'm close to 16 weeks pregnant and all of sudden i.had severe abdominal pain last night which lasted about 20 minutes which made me dry heave a lot. it was the middle of the night and I got very sweaty all of a sudden and then it just went away. is that normal. it scared the hell out of me as the pain was so bad and it wasn't localised. it was just my entire abdominal area. I didn't have any bleeding or spotting so im going to wait and call my doctor today. has anyone experienced this before ?
