Baby monitor help

I just switched from a Levano to a Motorola. The levano battery died.

So with the new Motorola, I can barely hear my child unless she is screaming. Is this normal? It is not very far from her so I don't get why

Also, if the screen is off and my child starts to make noise, will it turn on automatically or do I always have to hit the screen on button to see what's going on?
